Today there's word that our two forthcoming ballparks, the Mets' Citi Field and the new Yankee Stadium, will open within a couple of days of each other this coming spring. The Mets stadium will host its first game April 14th, while the inaugural game at the House that Ruth Did Not Build will happen April 16th.
A couple blogs have been giving blow-by-blow updates on the construction of the facilities: The shots above come from Stadium Page, which has been documenting the Citi Field build, and Yankee site Sliding Into Home.
The cost of the new Yankee Stadium is $1.3 billion, making it the most expensive stadium ever built in the U.S. and the third most expensive in the world. Citi Field is costing a comparatively cheap $800 million. Both have reaped hundreds of millions of dollars in public subsidies.
Brooklyn, Queens Among Nation's 10 Most Populous Counties
Brooklyn is the seventh-largest county in the United States, according to new census estimates. The County of Kings has 2,528,050 residents. Queens was No. 10 with 2,270,338; and Manhattan was No. 19 with 1,620,867 residents. The census' estimates run through July 1, 2007.
Although all three experienced population gains over previous years' estimates going back to 2000, none were among the nation's 100 fastest-growing counties; nor were the Bronx or Staten Island. The Bronx was No. read more »
Carrion: Over $1.5 B. Invested in The Bronx in '07 (UPDATED: It's Less than '06 Investment Amount)
Bronx borough president and one-time mayoral hopeful Adolfo Carrion Jr. said in his annual development report, released today, that $1.5 billion was invested in residential, commercial and institutional development projects in the Bronx from November 2006 through November 2007. During that period, 914 new addresses were added and over $1.3 billion invested in the borough, according to the report. A total of $453 million was invested in June, more than double the amount of any other month in 2007. read more »
