"The first thing is, we don't all live here," director Andrew Jarecki explained while introducing a short talk by his brother Eugene to the small crowd gathered in his mother Gloria's Upper East Side apartment on Wednesday night. The celebration was in honor of Eugene's recently released The American Way of War, a book about the American military-industrial complex (he also directed a documentary, 2005's Why We Fight, on the subject). In addition to talking about the contents of the book, Eugene also discussed the ascent of Barack Obama.

In September, Kirsten Dunst told Harper's Bazaar that she was working on a film about election day called Why Tuesday? as the first project for her new company Wooden Spoon Productions, which she formed over the summer. 

Our understanding was that the film would be something packaged for an election week or day release. But according to the Associated Press, Ms. Dunst is in fact in North Dakota right this minute working on the documentary with filmmaker Jacob Soboroff. (Oddly, while the Harper's Bazaar profile indicated that the title of the film was Why Tuesday?, the AP says the documentary hasn't been named yet.) 

The film will reportedly question why America has the lowest voter turn-out of most other countries and more specifically, why Election Day falls on a weekday rather a weekend.  read more »

Wednesday evening, Gawker Media hosted a party at Soho House in honor of the soon-to-be-released film version of How To Lose Friends and Alienate People, Toby Young’s memoir of his misadventures as a contributing editor at Vanity Fair in the late '90s. Half of the crowd kept referring to the celebration as a book party, despite the fact that the book in question had been released over six years ago. Indeed, the film did seem to take a backseat, as the room was full of media types eager to speak with Mr. Young, who did not arrive until late.

On Sunday, September 7, the Moeller Snow gallery space on Bond street played host to a group of young, playfully disheveled, downtown types who had gathered there to hear the Swedish indie singer, Lykke Li perform, an event that was thrown together by Justin Kern of the Los Angeles-based boutique and event space, Not To Be Reproduced.

While guests like designer Erin Wasson and stylist Anastasia Barbieri awaited Ms. Li's performance, actress Kirsten Dunst arrived with Scott Sternberg, the designer behind Band of Outsiders for whose Saturday evening show Ms. Dunst was a model. Martha Stewart has been the victim of natural disasters this summer. First, Ms. Stewart's farm in Bedford, N.Y. was struck by lightning earlier this summer, and now her East Hampton home on Lily Pond Lane was also struck with a bolt, which fried her stereo system and her electronic driveway gate. The riveting tale of one-time real estate baron Robert Durst – estranged older brother of developer Douglas Durst – has been made into a feature film starring Kirsten Dunst and Ryan Gosling. Called All Good Things, the film will debut in 2009.

James Vanderbilt, writer of the Zodiac and Basic screenplays, will replace the original Spider-Man scribe David Koepp in the drafting of the fourth installment of the superhero series. Producers want more character-driven stories, rather than a focus on special effects, according to Reuters/the Hollywood Reporter.

No deals have been made to bring back series director Sam Raimi or stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst.

Plot points are being closely guarded by the studio, though the intent is to scale back the story to include only two villains instead of repeating the "Spider-Man 3" model. The third installment, which grossed $336.5 million domestically this year, saw Spidey battle a busy triumvirate of evildoers in the forms of Venom, Sandman and Goblin. It was widely reckoned as overly cumbersome with one too many plot lines.
