Leo’s Goatee and Russell’s Gut Can’t Save Ridley’s Scorched Bore

BODY OF LIES
RUNNING TIME 128 minutes
WRITTEN BY William Monaham
DIRECTED BY Ridley Scott
STARRING Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Mark Strong

Body of Lies is yet another in a long, tiresome line of loud, violent, nauseating and incoherent riffs on how mercenary and inhuman the spooks in the C.I.A. are, even to each other. Pointless and plotless, it’s nothing more than a series of gut-blasting near-death experiences, with Leonardo DiCaprio sporting a goatee for gonads. The idea is that a little facial fur might make him look a little less like a Boy Scout. Wrong. Action director Ridley Scott actually expects us to buy Leo as the toughest secret U.  read more »

“There is a danger with being jingoistic—you can’t do that—but this film isn’t about the war,” said the director Ridley Scott at the Sunday night premiere of his new film Body of Lies, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe. “It’s really a spy film in the spirit of The Spy Who Came In From the Cold, The Third Man, or Spy Game, my brother’s film. And who doesn’t want to be a spy?” (Mr. Scott's brother is the director Tony Scott.)

Mr. DiCaprio fielded questions about his personal life (still no comment as to whether he plans to settle down with Israeli model Bar Rafaeli).  read more »

Another Awesome Trailer: Revolutionary Road

Here at the Culture Czar, we've had our eye on Revolutionary Road for some time. Academy Award winner Sam Mendes' adaptation of the depressingly awesome Richard Yates novel, which reunites doomed Titanic lovers Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, seems like it should be a guaranteed home run: high-pedigree Oscar bait that will also be incredibly watchable and wildly sad. We. Can't. Wait.

However, there was some cause for concern over what Mr. Mendes would do with this material. Granted, he's an adept technical director. His films, without exception, are beautiful to look at, thanks in large part to his brilliant cinematographers like the late Conrad L.  read more »

Vanity Fair editor and restaurateur Graydon Carter has admitted what many have long suspected (hoped?): There is nothing that special about his ultra-exclusive Waverly Inn, the design for which was apparently "shamelessly" and "ruthlessly" borrowed from other places.  [P6 ]

Leo DiCaprio Welcoming Another Twilight Zone?

Cue that creepy theme song. Leonardo DiCaprio's production company and Warner Bros. are quietly seeking treatments and script ideas based on the show for feature development.

In the 1983 Twilight Zone, Warners made a four-segment film, with each segment based on an original episode in the series. Each mini-movie was made by a different director -- Joe Dante, John Landis, George Miller and Steven Spielberg. Mr. DiCaprio and his cohorts don't plan on making another episodic movie, but rather hope to build one continuing story line based on one or more episodes, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The companies plan on making big bucks off the rerun watchers:

Warners owns rights to the Rod Serling-penned episodes, which account for the bulk of its 1959-64 run.  read more »

The Discovery Channel recently announced plans to launch a 24-hour cable channel meant to ride the wave of interest in global warming and environmental issues.

Planet Green, Variety reported last night, will cover everything that's gone green in fashion, architecture, technology and food.

Anchoring the channel will be the series "Eco-Town," for which Leonardo DiCaprio is a producer, about the rebuilding of a Kansas town after a tornado--to exacting green specifications.

"You always hope to be an early adopter, and obviously there's a need this channel is addressing," Planet Green president and general manager Eileen O'Neill told Variety. "I think that, in terms of being relevant and impactful, the time is just right now."
