Alex Rodriguez split his Thanksgiving day between wife Cynthia's house in Miami (where his children live) and Madonna's house on nearby Star Island. Gwynnie (Finally) Gets a Little Goopy in Newsletter
We received Gwyneth Paltrow's most recent GOOP newsletter this morning (on time!) and now we (almost) feel bad for being so snippy in our study of paltrow.com. She begins with this scene:
In 1998, I was filming The Talented Mr. Ripley in Ischia, a little island off the coast of Naples in Italy. I got a call that changed my life. My father had been diagnosed with throat cancer, and it was stage four.
Gwynnie finally gets personal! Way to pull on our guilty heart strings... read more »

John Koblin gets the details of Bill Keller's budget talks with New York Times staffers, including news about a special "investment fund" to help pay for Web site growth. Mr. Keller tells The Observer, "The money has gone to hire a small number of editors, reporters and producers. Most of the vertical expansions are already launched, and some of their work has appeared in the printed page as well. read more »

On Monday, Oct. 20, Gwyneth Paltrow was dressed for rain. The Oscar-winning actress slinked down the red carpet at the London Film Festival premiere of her new movie, Two Lovers, swaddled in a furry Felder Felder jacket with long, leather sleeves over a gothic, black Salvatore Ferragamo frock. She looked ghoulish. A reporter from The Guardian newspaper stopped her to ask about her new Web site, GOOP, which quietly debuted in late September and has since released four newsletters dispatching advice from Ms. Paltrow on food, fashion and lifestyle choices. What did the name GOOP mean?
“Well, G. P. are my initials and Goop is actually a family nickname,” Ms. read more »

Hamptons residents who paid up to $2,500 a plate to hang out with Gwyneth Paltrow at a benefit for the Amaryllis Farm Equine Rescue Organization at Steven Klein's Bridgehampton farm (read Daily Transom's account!) were upset when the actress refused to come out of the host's house for most of the evening. [NYDN]

Gwyneth Paltrow Tries to Save the Horses
On Saturday evening, 600 of the Hamptons' most philanthropic horse fans donned their finest black apparel and gathered for a somber twilight benefit at photographer Steven Klein's West Kill Farm in Bridgehampton. The "MANE" Event was co-chaired by Gwyneth Paltrow and Mr. Klein, and Madonna served as the evening's honorary chairperson (even though she's currently in London).
The candlelit affair began at dusk on the grassy field behind Mr. Klein's house. A haunting string refrain played on repeat, to the point where the Daily Transom felt a bit like we were caught in Requiem for a Dream, a feeling that only increased as the sun set completely and we could no longer find anyone (maybe the black dress code wasn't the best idea. read more »

On a recent balmy Saturday on the Ladies Mile of lower Fifth Avenue, the windows of Intermix, Anthropologie and H&M were just beginning to transition into displaying fall collections, but many of the shoppers shlepping around in 90-degree heat were curiously dressed in what could be mistaken for winter wear: Frye boots! Wolf at the Door
In 2008, a big day for record sales is a relative thing, for the majors and the indies alike. Physical sales are lower than ever, even for superstars; bands routinely crack Billboard’s top 10 with sales barely in the five digits. But today is a big day in the record industry.
Coldplay's newest, Viva la Vida, hits stores today; there are high, high hopes for the album. The band that broke with "Yellow" way back in 2000 has had a couple of smash records since then, A Rush of Blood to the Head in 2002 and X & Y three years later; they're as close to the sure thing (U2) as the record industry gets these days. But there's another band whose latest effort may tell more about what the future of the recording industry looks like. read more »
