Judging the state of society based on me? A ‘pox’? This show is not an effort to solve world issues. It’s a bit of glamour, a bit of an escape.” [LA Times]

Rachel Zoe Says Journalists Are Big Fat Liars

It turns out that celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe is not as thick-skinned as you would expect of someone who has spent so much time standing alongside such oft-photographed personalities as Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie. In the most recent episode of The Rachel Zoe Project, which was filmed earlier this year, Ms. Zoe comes across an item on NYmag.com's the Cut blog describing an incident in which she was locked out of Marc Jacobs' fall 2008 show in February. The discovery of the fairly even-handed account prompts her to burst into tears.

Last evening, the Cut ran an item celebrating their newfound fame—bloggers have to take what they can get!—while also seeming a bit confused by Ms.  read more »

Rachel Zoe Has No Respect for Our Dwindling Economy

Today's review of The Rachel Zoe Project in the Times is a little mean and a little extreme with accusations—and sort of perfect.

One of our favorite paragraphs:

Given that Ms. Zoe is already a pox on humanity — exploiting an aesthetic of dissipation, invading our collective consciousness and spraying it with dummy dust — it is amazing that “The Rachel Zoe Project,” which focuses on her career, manages to send its audience deeper into the territory of smug NPR obsessives who won’t stop ranting about triviality’s conquest of the American soul.

Amazing, yes. But even more fascinating is Rachel Zoe's apparent disregard for the financial crisis that seems to be hitting everyone but a 37-year-old "stylist" who plays dress-up with Hollywood actresses.  read more »

Cecilia Dean Tells Us About Her New House, But Rachel Zoe Won't Tell Us Much of Anything

Wednesday night's party on the Mini Rooftop in Chelsea thrown by V magazine in honor of its new issue was a downsized version of last week's Interview magazine bash—same crowd, different venue. The only difference was that everyone appeared a little more worn down by the elaborate Fashion Week festivities that have taken place since.

The roof—a new addition to New York's hip party venues—has a grassy knoll in the center with globular seating cavities resembling bathroom sinks where fashionable guests reclined with fruity cocktails, waiting for the Swedish indie artist Lykke Li to perform. (Ms. Li was also the special guest at a small gathering in Soho last Sunday which attracted Kirsten Dunst and Adrian Grenier.)   read more »

On Thursday, September 4, NBC Universal threw a party on the rooftop of Gramercy Park Hotel in honor of Rachel Zoe's new show on Bravo, The Rachel Zoe Project, and invited her dearest fashionable friends for the occasion.

One of the first guests to arrive was designer Gilles Mendel of J. Mendel, who this year has opted for a still life presentation instead of a runway show.

"For many, many years people have told me that would be great for them to look at my clothes closely," said Mr. Mendel. "It's about showing clothes in a museum so that you can look closer and longer. For the kind of clothes I make there is a need for more interaction."  read more »

Tamara Mellon May Take a More Active Role at Halston

Less than a day after designer Marco Zanini was reported to be out at Halston, the fashion house recently revived by movie mogul Harvey Weinstein and Jimmy Choo designer Tamara Mellon, Fashion Week Daily is reporting that celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe may also be departing.

"She has no creative control over Halston," said a brand spokesman back in February when Ms. Zoe reportedly failed to appear for Halston's fall show. "Her main responsibility is as an adviser for red carpet and celebrity styling." Sources at Halston are wondering if she will follow Mr. Zanini out the door.

Georgina Chapman, Mr. Weinstein's wife and designer for Marchesa, is apparently not taking over the creative role, leaving Ms. Mellon, who, according to unnamed sources, may be taking on a more prominent creative role at Halston.

George Clooney: The Next Rachel Zoe?

George Clooney: The Next Rachel Zoe?

Plenty of leading ladies relied on the expert advice of their stylists to “play it safe” on the red carpet at last night’s Oscars. (During a brief interview, Jennifer Garner, who looked insanely chic in a black Oscar de la Renta ruffled gown, mentioned her beauty-bestie Rachel Zoe several times.) Sarah Larson, on the other hand, looked to blast-from-the-past actor George Clooney, her boyfriend of seven months, to ensure her ensemble was sufficiently wowable.

“I curled her hair,” Mr. Clooney deadpanned to Us of how he helped Ms. Larson prep for the big night. Contrary to comedian Kathy Griffin’s recent claims that only D-list celebs show up super early to red carpet events, the Best Actor nominee, who graces the cover of the current issue of Time, showed up two hours early, allowing the couple enough time to chat with every news outlet stationed along the publicity gauntlet set up outside L.A.’s Kodak Theater. Mr. Clooney, it seems, isn’t just a master coiffeur, he also bragged of being Ms. Larson’s “seamster.” (The brunette beauty wore a beaded, silver-and-pink Valentino gown to the awards show.) “The ironing of the beads works very well,” he added to the whisper weekly of his work on the frock. “I sewed all the beads back on myself.” Despite the apparent ease with which he completed Ms. Larson’s look, his plan for the rest of the evening, he said, was to “drink.”

Misshapes to Go Digital (Soon!)

Misshapes to Go Digital (Soon!)
Patrick McMullan

The expansion and promotion of the Misshapes's je ne sais quoi continues apace. After months of planning, construction and a few obligatory hiccups, the downtown-dwelling, party-deejaying, trendsetting trio’s official Web site will launch, they say, as early as next week. The group hopes that by cutting the digital ribbon in the midst of all the mayhem at Bryant Park, the fashion-minded site can tap into the event's publicity machine.  read more »

Liv and Liev--Live! But Naomi and Tinsley Want to Leave

Actress Liv Tyler is flanked by benefit chairs Amy Sacco and Mary Alice Stephenson.

At the Free Arts NYC 8th Annual Art Auction Benefit at the Milk Gallery on Monday, April 23, stars discussed the power of the arts with the Transom.

"Well, just always to encourage someone to seek a creative life is wonderful," said a glowing Naomi Watts, whose dress, by Australian designer Stephanie Conley, gracefully draped her burgeoning pregnant belly. The 38-year-old actress added that she appreciates Live Arts for helping those "struggling with problems." Then she sent someone to fetch her boyfriend, Liev Schreiber--beelining for the bar--so that they could take off early.

"I grew up in a household with a lot of music, and I know that Free Arts isn't necessarily about music, but that was a huge thing for me in my life," said the radiant actress Liv Tyler, 29, who co-chaired the event with Scarlett Johanssen (a no-show). "And creativity in general, especially with my son"--Milo!--"you know, we paint or we draw and we play with Play-Doh and we dance and sing and perform things, and it's such a big part of a child's expression, and there's a lot of children in the city, even in the schools, there's no access to that whatsoever."

Does the brunette beauty have a favorite artist? "I don't! I'm terrible!" Ms. Tyler said. "I don't know that much about art, I mean, I'm very in awe of it. I mean, I love Van Gogh, I really always have, but my husband knows a lot about art and he shows me things."

In complete contrast to Ms. Tyler's delicate whisper, the stylist Rachel Zoe, 35, was practically vibrating as she hollered at friends standing at the far end of the bar.

"I grew up with it," she said of Art. "My parents are collectors, so I came up with it since I came out of the womb. It's important on every level-for education, for culture, for understanding pop culture, it's history, I mean, it's everything, it's a huge influence."
Perhaps not so much on socialite Tinsley Mortimer, flying solo in a white dress, who chatted for a bit with Derek Blasberg and his mini-me pal, former Vogue-temp Lyle Maltz, before making like Ms. Watts and leaving (Liev-ing?). Ms. Mortimer said that she was not giving any interviews "tonight."

How about tomorrow, then?

What's Rachel Zoe Pushing Now?

The vampire and stylist-to-the-emaciated-girl-stars Rachel Zoe followed in Lindsay Lohan's red-headed wake at the Prairie Home Companion premiere on Sunday night. (More on all that in tomorrow's paper.) But what's Ms. Zoe working these days?

"I love the new YSL bags," Ms. Zoe said. "I love, love the new YSL bags--there's a new one that's very boho with gold rings, looks like ones from the seventies, which I love." For shoes: "It's all about platforms--Chloe platforms."

And, The Transom must know, what metallic shade is so very now? "I'm all about yellow gold," Ms. Zoe said. —Mary Katherine Stump
