CanWest Buys out the New Republic

Just days after purchasing the shares from money men Roger Hertog and Michael Steinhardt, Canadian media giant Can West has completely bought out the New Republic. The Observer first reported in Dec. 2006 (2nd item) that CanWest was taking a majority stake in the company. That was confirmed on Feb 23. Instead of just majority interest, CanWest now owns 100% of the company.

Marty Peretz, who no longer owns part of the magazine, for the first time since 1974, will remain as Editor in Chief.

NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release: February 27, 2007 CanWest Buys The New Republic

Toronto, ON: - CanWest Global Communications Corp. ("CanWest") today announced that a wholly owned subsidiary has acquired a 100% interest in The New Republic, a 93 year old United States based political magazine. This acquisition follows the purchase by CanWest in 2006 of a 30% interest.

"The New Republic, similar to CanWest's other publications, has a strong foundation and a proud history. We look forward to seeing it become even stronger" said Tom Strike, President of CanWest MediaWorks International. "In today's media environment, we need to place a priority on delivering quality content to readers when, where and how they want it. The New Republic is well-positioned to do just that".

The magazine and its website are currently undergoing a major overhaul. The makeover includes a new frequency of publication, bigger issues and a new reader-friendly design. The enhanced website will be launched soon with more daily digital content.

Greg MacNeil, a well-respected veteran of Canadian publishing, is acting as Interim Publisher. Marty Peretz will continue as Editor-in-Chief.

Will TNR become more reality-based? I kind of doubt it. More probably, they will continue to shill for The Decider, come what may.

Canadian ownership, eh?

Canada = Quebec = France = the terrorists have won.

EH (not verified) says:

Smart move on Marty's part. His attitude is on the wane in the world at large so he can sell out while his self-generated hysteria is at a peak. Actually, he's probably kicking himself a little for not getting on his knees a year ago, but 80% of overpriced is still pretty good.

Like anyone in the US will believe any citations from a magazine about US politics published by a Canadian publisher. Right.

Con Slapper (not verified) says:

Can foreign ownership really hope to breathe accuracy and truth into what is decidenly a fascist rag? The future remains to be seen.

NeoCynic (not verified) says:

Birds of a feather stick together. CanWest is a rightwing propaganda conglomerate which ran in its National Post newspaper last year a blantant piece of war-mongering anti-Iran agitprop purporting to tell us of a new law that required Jews and Christians to wear badges. The story proved to be absolutely untrue, but was more newsworthy for what it said about the ideological bent of CanWest and its super-Zionist owner, Izzy Asper.

meemoo (not verified) says:

Hey NeoCynic, Izzy is dead, has been for years now. You are super-uninformed.

canuck (not verified) says:

not only is izzy dead, but the post is much less rightwing than it was under conrad black.

and besides ... right of center canadian lines up reasonably well with left of center american.

Neocynic (not verified) says:

LOL! Your right, he is still dead. Yet that does not detract from the point that via the Asper family that still runs the show, the company is rabidly pro-Israel. Reuters complained that CanWest was altering Reuter reports from the mideast under its byline to slant the news. If you want the news from the Mideast, go to the Israeli Embassy for a handout rather than read it second-hand in a CanWest rag.

Bushwhacker (not verified) says:

expect the New Republic to go from being a serious mag to a fluffy piece with little content or intelligent writers just like all the Aspers other papers with has seen cutbacks, little original journalism, and a strict right wing editorial control. Your paper has just be ruined now that the Aspers have their hands on it.

Robert Skoglund (not verified) says:

I just saw a very scary man on TV saying some very scary things --- well, actually he was telling some outright lies, and your page came up when I Googled to find out who this Roger Hertog is.

We are living in very dangerous times when men like Roger Hertog can buy the media. Anyone who wants to know more about where America is headed today can read 12 years of German history starting in 1933.
