Spitzer Forum Notes
NYPIRG's Albany man Blair Horner said the new governor "has to have a big reform victory that people understand" quickly, because the longer he's there, and the more Spitzer works with lawmakers, the harder it'll be to leverage public support for major changes.
Lobbyist and consultant Norman Adler criticized the much-discussed Brennan Center report about how to reform the state legislature for shoddy methodology. They "should be embarrassed to put that report out," he said.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld said that one major mistake he made as governor was to have been "too savage" with legislative leaders from the other party. Which makes it all the more intriguing to think about what might have happened if he ever made it to Albany.
And former New Jersey Gov. Jim Florio, who lost his seat because he passed a huge tax increase, partly in order to fund a CFE-like lawsuit, said his situation was made so difficult because, unlike governors in New York, he couldn't borrow money to pay for operating expenses.

does anyone care or listen to Blair Horner's stupid rants? He reminds of the character on Boston Legal who goes around killing people with a shovel.
Like a pig in slop, Norman Adler makes millions off the dysfunctionalism and corruption in Albany
Actually, Horner's probably right this time; Spitzer does need an early, convincing win, especially now that his chances of success at removing Hevesi seem to be dwindling.
The biggest problem the incoming governor faces, in my humble opinion? Shelly Silver, whose pragmatic view of how politics is done is only 180 degrees out of phase with Spitzer's.
Adler's a symptom of what's wrong with the present system...
"Cold sore defends herpes virus"
Surprise: Eliot and I agree on reforming Albany at least 90% of our agenda is in sync. Look at the Assembly Democratic legslation over the past dozen years for campaign finance, budget, etc. reforms. The Governor (Pataki) stopped it. The Governor-elect and I will work to convince Senator Bruno that we have an historic opportunity to make New York State governance better.
Its going to be very interesting to see how animated Blair Horner's criticisms are of Governor Spitzer. Up to this point, Blair thinks of himself as the "Prophet of reform;" will he be an equal opportunity critic if Spitzer is unable to get his "big victory?" Stay tuned.
Didn't Florio lose his seat because he actually passed a huge tax increase? Am I missing something?
Good government needs to take into account reality. Each branch of government has to deal with the real world. Governors need to show they have a big picture; local legislators need to look out for their districts and legislative leaders need to balance both.
That is the real world no matter what kind of make believe reforms are instituted. It works that way in Federal, State and local politics. The trick is to do a credible and transparent job of vision and compromise to accomplish for as many of the people as possible.
