Monserrate Concedes
In a statement where Monserrate pointedly doesn't congratulate the winner, he said, "I am proud to have run a grassroots campaign of inclusion and reform that gave our residents a voice in the future of their community...The campaign was also successful in calling on all our leaders to address the area's need for more resources to protect and improve our future."
He went on to say, "I also look forward to working with our new Queens Democratic Party Chairman, Congressman Joseph Crowley, and all our elected officials to build a stronger and more unified party."
It seems to signal, if nothing else, that Monserrate doesn't plan a future run against Congressman Crowley -- something he considered in 2004.

-- Azi Paybarah After All Votes Counted, Close Race Comes to EndCORONA -- Council Member Hiram Monserrate, a candidate in last week's Primary Election for State Senate in the 13 th District, today made the following statement regarding the election results after opening all paper ballots and a final canvass of the voting machines:
"I am proud to have run a grassroots campaign of inclusion and reform that gave our residents a voice in the future of their community. Throughout the year and the campaign, we worked hard to bring residents into the democratic process, registering thousands of new voters in our growing communities. The campaign was also successful in calling on all our leaders to address the area's need for more resources to protect and improve our future.
I want to thank the thousands of voters and supporters that brought us so close on Election Day and I look forward to continuing my work to deliver resources and results to the residents and families of Queens in the City Council. I also look forward to working with our new Queens Democratic Party Chairman, Congressman Joseph Crowley, and all our elected officials to build a stronger and more unified party."

Is Friedman conceeding? Harrison? Cohen? Smith?
So much for Rock Hackshaw's Room 8 prediction that Hiram will squeak out a win.
Did he pick barron also?
(I am not sure)
Is Friedman conceeding? Harrison? Cohen? Smith?
Rock did not select Barron. He didn't endorse him either.
Sabini's lead actually widened throughout the entire counting process. He ended up winning by 249.
Sabini's lead only dropped in one place - Hiram's head.
So that whole 66-vote margin thing--once again Hiram Monserrate tries to take advantage of an uninformed public. That man is good at making it look like he cares about the masses but the reality is that he preys upon their ignorance and weaknesses for his own personal gain.
Friedman will concede her Democratic Primary loss, but not concede the race. She still has an opportunity to win in the General when registered independents and more democrats go to the polls.
She is already guaranteed the Working Families line and I'm sure WFP sees an opportunity here similar to it electing Leticia James to the City Council. The 74 AD will certainly have a three-way race this November and may the best candidate win.
While it's unlikely that Hiram will run against Crowley in 2008, there's no reason to believe his statement. Hiram has changed his mind about what he running for so many times in the last 5 years, I wouldn't rule out a challenge to Hillary in New Hampshire.
this shows that monserrate has a base. sabini has one as well and was able to overcome a spirited challenge by brining a citywide coalition together for his campaign. things may be different in 2 or 4 years. monserrate has to ask himself if he wants to be a perennial losing candidate or if he thinks that this is a building block for the future. i have to think that sabini is hoping to fend off challenges until redistricting gives him more favorable lines although that is hard in that part of queens. but when it comes to drawing district lines, many strange things have happened.

danielnyc, you and Sylvia are nuts.
Hello?? Not many of the electeds who rep areas near Stuy Town want to see Friedman win except for Mendez and Maloney. The only reason they didn't want to endorse Kavanagh is because Maloney endorsed Friedman and nobody wanted to piss her off. Who did Lappin, Bing and Garodnick endorse? Brewer?? Hmmm...
Not only was it close but the number of voters increased by about 2,000 voters compared to Sabini races in 2002 and 2004 to 11,000 and change. Since this was the only race, all of these voters were coming out for this race.
Sabini did not get 50% in 02.
Sabini won by 2% in 04
Sabini won by less than 1% in 06.
So this speaks less to a Hiram base as to a failure of Hiram to run a campaign that built on the past races and move Sabini voters to vote for change. Does anyone think that the last challenger has a "base"?
Things Hiram should learn:
1) He is in a district where no one has an allegiance to "Hispanic"-- you have communities from North, South and Central America and if you lump them together you do so at great peril.
2) No one cares about Al D
what was the difference for sabini? i thought he was toast.
uh, 11:05 your numbers are a little off, Sabini won by 12 points in 2002 and 18 points in 2004.
For the record:
Total Votes 2002: 10,429
Total Vottes Sabini: 4,838 (46% for Sabini)
Total Votes 2004: 9907
Total Votes Sabini: 5,819
(58% for Sabini)
Total Votes 2006: 11,896
Sabini Votes: 6,052
(50% for Sabini)
