A Republican Priest's Attack on Obama
Here’s Rockville Centre-based priest Jim Lisante, taking shots at Barack Obama during last night’s New York State Republican fund-raising dinner in Midtown.
“And one more thing, Lord: please tell Senator Obama that maybe change is a good thing, and that maybe he should think about changing his favorite preacher. I know a lot more of us would be comfortable with his judgment skills if he hadn’t sat for twenty years through those words offered by his preacher of division, bigotry, and, honestly, half-truths, without a word of objection from Senator Obama. That is, until the media brought it up. Now, he doesn’t want any part of the guy. I’m willing to be his new preacher.”
Lisante added, “One final thing, Lord, I promise. This November, could you keep an eye on all of us and see that the change we embrace comes from Arizona, and not Illinois?”
Lisante, it seems, still revels in being the most partisan priest ever.
Bravo. The truth hurts so I expect the Obama contingent will lash out now.

Anyone who uses a prayer for personal attacks, throw-away applause lines and self-promotion clearly does not understand faith or Divinity. I hope this guy enjoys spending eternity in Hell.
Someone should report this guy and his parish to the IRS. It's clearly illegal for a non-profit organization to be involved in any type of political/partisan activities. The tax-exempt status of Lisante and his parish (St. Thomas the Apostle in West Hempstead) should be revoked.

I am a devout Catholic and that was one of the most disgusting displays I have ever seen. Someone might want to let this Priest know that the Pope has condemed the war in Iraq and that vieled references and partisans attacks do not belong in prayer. If this priest wants to spout off political commentary...take off the collar and stop embarassing his faith.

To those who commented above and didn't like what the priest had to say: do you also want to get the IRS on Jeremiah Wright? probably not - that would be un-hip and politically incorrect. But to attack a Catholic priest - and wish him to go to hell - now that's cool! edgy! Everything a liberal strives for! After all, liberals believe in free expression....just as long they agree with what's being said. Hypocrits.
Apparently many of the religious persons in this country have decided to go nuts in the past few months. These last two were obviously playing and pandering to their audiences for a laugh. And though they both got those laughs, it was inappropriate in the efforts to further their candidates agendas. Though as citizens they have every right to their opinions but they also have a responsibility to their positions in their communities to conduct themselves in ways that do not diminish their effectiveness in their work. Despite their success with the audiences in whom they were engaging, they both failed their candidates and their communities this week.

Clergy and all faith groups would be wise to heed this. We taxpayers have given all of you tax breaks, based, in part on the fact that we believe your business is not human governments, but divine aspirations.
Stay out of American politics, or face taxpayers' wrath.
I am a practising catholic and active member of the Knights of Columbus.
I have no doubt that many other Knights throughout North America, distant themselves from the partisan active party politics comments of this priest, as I do.
His comments is not in line with Pope Benedict XVI's many speeches during his recent visit to the USA

Since when is the US a theocracy and priests and pastors are supposed to be expousing partisan politics for applause breaks and baffoonery such as this joke of a priest? I think he may want to come out of his priveleged circles and fund raising and get to doing some of God's work that he was ordained to do.

As a side note, his supposed "quote" from Obama (greatest country...lets change it) is from a known e-mail hoax debunked on Snopes (http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/change.asp). The quote was actually originally an attempt at humor by the National Review aimed at McCain.
As an evangelical Christian, I find Msgr. Lisante's "prayer" to be the most disgusting conduct I have observed in this election cycle. It is utter sacrilege.
Now we know why the Reformation was necessary.

This man's "prayer" comes at an interesting moment. Just this week Chicago Reverend Michael Pfleger has been chastised for an outburst here in Senator Obama's Trinity United Church of Christ on Chicago's southside. His "outburst" consisted of an imitation of Mrs. Clinton with such phrases as "I'm white. I'm entitled. Now a black man is stealing my show!" Here in Chicago this, and its fallout, has been major headlines daily. Mr. Obama has had to reprimand and distance himself from Reverend Pfleger for his comments and actions. I honestly can't understand why. These are not Mr. Obama's words. Hillary Clinton is a pouting, take-my-toys-and-go-home, self-anointed, spoiled, whiney loser, and Reverend Pfleger only spoke the truth that we all know but dare not voice.

Reverend Pfleger has been a constant champion of the poor, the disenfranchised and a constant crusader against such things as guns, prostitution, liquor advertising in poor neighborhoods, and tobacco. But for some reason it seems that commenting on the democratic race for a nominee and simply speaking the truth that we all know but are afraid to verbalize ourselves is somehow wrong and shameful behavior.

So, along comes Jim Lisante. A priest who takes aim at Senator Obama shrouded in the clever protection of prayer. How disgusting. Was Reverend Pfleger out of line in the manner in which he voiced his opinion? Maybe. But using prayer at a republican fundraiser to voice and further your feelings on a particular candidate and influence the opinions of others is nothing short of repugnant.

John McCain said he thinks the kind of language and treatment of Senator Clinton Reverend Pfleger displayed was unwarranted, uncalled for and disgraceful. Senator Obama needlessly distanced himself from Reverend Pfleger and his actions in the name of the high road. Will Senator McCain do the same? To protest behavior on the opposing side (democratic), while ignoring similar behavior on his own side (republican) is equally unwarranted, uncalled for and disgraceful. If Senator McCain does not reprimand and distance himself from Mr. Lisante's comments, as Mr. Obama was made to do, then he is no better than the man from whose mouth the words came.

Truly amazing! Hypocrisy abounds! Using a prayer to behave just like Wright and Pfleger. At least, they did not invoke God in their partisan attacks. These folks need to be reminded that God is neither a Republican nor Democrat. They all need to spend time prayerfully reading the Gospels and the reflecting on the life of Christ. If they are truly converted they will behave differently.
So as long as you are anti-abortion it doesn't matter what else you do even if it's wrong.

The event was a Republican Fundraiser, not Democratic. The Rev had every right to speak as an American Citizen. Why is it the Republicans are always wrong...the Dem's always right?
