The View from Hillaryland on Spitzer's License Concession

Was it Hillary Clinton, as it's been widely suggested, who finally pressured Eliot Spitzer into abandoning his controversial proposal to give driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants?

After the debate, I got a chance to ask Mandy Grunwald, Hillary’s chief media consultant, if this was the case.

“I think we all know that Governor Spitzer does what Governor Spitzer thinks is right," she said. "My understanding is that he gave her a heads-up the night before."

I asked why Clinton waited until then to make her opposition public. Grunwald said, "She wanted to make a very clear statement, because the whole question has been have you been clear enough. I think she was going to do it tonight, but when Spitzer made his decision it seemed appropriate to comment on it then. And as far as I know the whole sequence of it.”

Glad to know Spitzer thinks for himself -- the less influence Hilary has, the happier I am.
