Another Candidate for Brooklyn Borough President?

Buried inside this recent Courier Life article about Michael Nelson, the Councilman from Brooklyn who spent an unusually high amount of city money on local advertisements, is this interesting factoid:

“Nelson is now a candidate to succeed Marty Markowitz as Brooklyn borough president.”

If that's true (Nelson's office didn't return a call for additional information), that would make three candidates for the seat so far. The other two are Bill de Blasio and Charles Barron.

Anybody else making a stealth announcement?

UPDATE: Nick Perry is in the race.

Mike Nelson has as much a chance of being the next boro prez. as does Charles Barron. He may have a lock on the Sephardic Jewish vote but across the board he loses. Even his own constituents in Manhattan Beach don't like him. He has ruined the landscape of that neighborhood by his support by new owners & there over development of hoese. He better look elsewhere to get a job in 2009.

Insiders know that Nelson is not running for BP. This is a smokescreen for the race that he is really considering - NYS Assembly. Nelson thinks that Cymbrowitz is vulnerable and may try and take him on in 2008.

I live in Sheepshead Bay, the area Mike Nelson represents and there is no way that there is any truth to him running for Borough President. Aside from his lack of initiative, is the fact that Carl Kruger is looking to run as well and has widely been a "known, yet undeclared" candidate. There are alot of rumors in that area regarding the Council seat, one was that Nelson's wife was going to run, but she's in poor health and that Nelson and Kruger both have staffers interested in the Council seat, as well as the Community Board Chair. A recent Bay News article profiled on the early jockeying for the race. My bet is that Nelson retires, or runs for Kruger's seat in a special if Carl can win the BP race.

Dom Recchia is still contemplating running for BP, but Vito Lopez doesn't want him, so Lopez is encouraging Coney Island Dom to help the other Vito, Fossella, the only Republican representing NYC in the house, by running a primary against Steve Harrison, who came closer in 06 to capturing the 13th Congressional seat for the Dems than any other candidate since the district was gerrymandered to be Republican. After Recchia makes a fool out of himself, while forcing Harrison to divert resources away from trying to unseat Fossella, in the primary, where Harrison will destroy Dom, who can't even vote for himself because he doesn't live in the district (He lives in Nadler's district).

Nitwit Nelson (not verified) says:

Nelson is a lazy do nothing councilman. HE is never in his office. Getting him on the phone is impossible, and he is never seen in city hall unless he is quickly checking in for a hearing before he runs out. This guy is not known for being smart or ambitious.

What has this guy ever done anyway?
I had the misfortune of running into him one day while I was out to eat at a local diner here in Sheepshead bay. WHile standing in line I introduced my self and began a casual conversation. All I can take from that time is that Nelson is either senile or simply does not care about people. We need a councilman who will do things, not just say call his office, where he never is, nor does he return a call. IF I WANTED TO SPEAK TO YOUR CHIEF OF STAFF I WOULD HAVE, INSTEAD I PAY YOUR SALARY AND YOU DO NOTHING FOR US.

NO TO NELSON FOREVER. YOUR WIFE'S SICKENESS IS NOT AN EXCUSE FOR YOU TO NEVER DO A THING IN THE NYC COUNCIL SINCE 1999.

To 12:52- Can Roy Moskowitz please stop posting comments. All these "Recchia running will divert resources from Steve" is so wrong, so any time these comments appear, we all know exactly who they are coming from. And the saddest thing is you did nothing for Steve in 06, I remember something of a demotion in your responsibilities and will do less in 08, except for taking shots at a viable candidate and that is Dom Recchia. Thanks.
